Photoprotection and Cosmetic Procedures

Particular care should be taken following:

Plastic or reconstructive surgery
Filler or botulinum toxin injections
Laser resurfacing
Deep chemical peels

In all of these situations, the stratum corneum is temporarily thinner, making the skin more vulnerable to ultraviolet radiation.

Bruising and oedema are common after many of these procedures and, by themselves, represent a contraindication to sun exposure.

Laser Hair Removal

Laser hair removal should only be performed before the skin becomes tanned. Otherwise, epidermal melanin absorbs part of the laser or intense pulsed light (IPL) energy, increasing the risk of depigmented patches developing after treatment.

Fillers and Botulinum Toxin

Filler or botulinum toxin injections should ideally not be performed during the days immediately preceding a boating holiday or before prolonged use of a diving mask. Pressure from the diving mask, together with prolonged sun exposure, may compromise the best possible aesthetic outcome.

Key Message:
The same recommendations described in “Photoprotection and Scars” should be followed.
